Mission

The Master's program helps students to acquire relevant skills and knowledge to enter either a research career in human geography and related social science disciplines or a professional career outside academia. There is choice between two profiles: Urban Studies and Economic Geography. Upon completion of the program students acquire the degree of a Master of Arts (M.A.) in human geography (Urban Studies or Economic Geography).

What qualifications am I going to acquire if I decide to take the Master's degree in "Geographies of Globalization"?

Upon successful completion of the Master's program candidates will have acquired a degree with international recognition which enables them to apply theories, methods and skills from human geography in academia and practice. The program prepares students for jobs at universities and research institutes, in public administration, private and public planning as well as in consulting in the following fields:

  • Regional and urban planning
  • Regional development
  • Real estate development and management
  • Tourism
  • International Organisations
  • Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs)
  • Logistics
  • Market Research
  • Mobility management
  • Development Media and Public Relations

The primary skills are

  • Analytical thinking in dealing with social problems
  • Transdisciplinary linkage of questions from human geography with other disciplines
  • Competence and understanding for dealing with problems from human geography and social science in research and practice
  • Independent design, implementation and analysis of empirical studies
  • Critical analysis of everyday patterns of argumentation on the basis of scientific method
  • Writing concise and coherent academic texts and reports on complex social issues
  • Rhetorical competencies to present complex social issues drawing on a range of new media
  • Team work and moderation and mediation of discussions
  • Enhancement of professional and general foreign language proficiency through reading English-language texts and studying abroad
  • Intercultural communication through studying abroad in a different academic and social culture and interacting with foreign students

Further Information

  • Start and Duration of the Program: The program commences every year in the winter term (October) and takes two years to complete.
  • Language of instruction and language proficiency: Courses are held in English and German. Proficiency in both languages is required. Applicants with a degree from a university where German is not the primary language of instruction have to show proof of German language proficiency according to the Ordnung über die Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (DSH).
  • Additional requirements: Admission can be granted upon the condition that the candidate takes additional courses from the Bachelor’s degree in human geography of a maximum 30 CP.
